Bio
My life is so completely different from what would have been expected of me growing up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in the 1950's and 60's.
I went to PS 185, and was a smart child, getting good marks and often being at the top of the class.
I've moved far from Brooklyn now. I have been living in Canada for the last 34 years and am currently in the small town of Nelson (10,000 people) in the mountains of British Columbia.
After high school I headed off to Brooklyn College and bounced between English, Psychology and Fine Arts before I finally left in 1968. I rebelled thoroughly and completely from my upbringing, just like many, many others of my generation.
I did marry a 'nice Jewish boy from Far Rockaway', but the trouble was I wasn't Jewish. His mother threw herself on the floor chanting Kaddish when she found out we had gotten married. My parents reaction wasn't quite as drastic, but they weren't particularly happy.
When Phillip and I were married we lived on Ocean Avenue between Avenues J and K - Flatbush.
Phillip and I decided to move to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1971. We had visited some friends there in 1970 and fallen in love with it. Our marriage broke up by 1972.
I lived the single life for a few years, figured out that I am bisexual, and finally settled down enough to get married again and have two daughters. That marriage lasted until 1985.
Leannah is 33 and living in Ottawa where she co-owns a massage therapy clinic and Anneke is 28 and work in Nelson at a local hardware store.. She has two wonderful daughters: Juniper who is 9, and Alexis who is 5.
I've been back to school a few times, but have mostly taught myself by thinking, reading, discussing and doing. I took practical nurses' training at Vancouver Community College in 1974 but was also working with the Women's Health Collective and Vancouver Birth Centre to learn everything I could about women's health and midwifery. That was also the beginning of my radical feminism and bisexuality.
In the mid-80's after moving to the mountains, I went back to school again taking graphic design, photography and computers. From there I taught myself everything about the internet and web development. I've been designing websites since 1995.
I finally completed my BA in 1998 though distance education. I would love to go for a masters in communication someday.
